Isaiah 28:16

16 So this is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone,

a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation;

the one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic.

Recently, we had a meeting with our church architect group. They told us about the need for good soil testing and foundations for a building. They had been asked to renovate a building that was over 100 years old. There was a problem they discovered as they did initial inspections. The foundation had started to crumble. Sections of it were very dry and unstable. They knew it was more than likely this building and its foundation weren’t going to survive a renovation. The foundation had let the building down.

There are so many “foundations” we try to build our lives on. It could be things like career, reputation, looks, friends, our intuition, money & investments, and many more. The problem is they all will eventually crumble. They can’t stand up under the weight of our needs and expectations. They can’t give us eternal life. They can’t make us right with God. They can’t give us lasting validation, identity, and worth. Only Jesus can do that and only Jesus has done that.

You have a solid foundation of worth in Jesus. You are of such great value to God that his Son laid down his life for you. You have a solid foundation of love from Jesus. You are so loved by God that he gave up his one and only Son for you. You have a solid foundation of identity in Jesus. You are called God’s child, forever. You have a solid foundation of certainty in Christ. You are right with God and will live with God for eternity. That is the solid foundation of your life. Lean on it. Depend on it. It will stand up in every adversity and problem of life. It will never crumble.

Normally we would say that boasting, i.e. bragging, isn’t a Christian virtue. Usually it turns into a very self-centered affair. However, you’ll notice in Romans 5:2, Paul says Christians boast. What? How? Isn’t that anti-Christian? Aren’t Christians supposed to be others-centered, God-centered, and humble? Here’s the neat...
