How can we imitate Christ today?

Ephesians 5:1-2

Therefore, be imitators of God as his dearly loved children. And walk in love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

My son likes Sonic the Hedgehog. He recently got into Sonic after watching the movie and some episodes of the cartoon. For those of you who don’t know, Sonic the Hedgehog started out as the main character of a video game on the Sega Genesis console. He runs at the speed of sound. That’s the part my son loves.

He likes Sonic so much that recently he has started to run like Sonic, which means he puts his arms straight back and runs as fast as he can. It was funny to watch him do that at baseball the other night. He was imitating Sonic because he thinks Sonic is pretty cool.

I think Jesus is pretty cool and I hope you do, too. How could you not? Look at Ephesians 5:1-2 above and find all the amazing things Jesus has done for you. It truly is astounding to think of the love Jesus has for you and the love has shown to you. He made you God’s child. Jesus is pretty amazing.

What do you do with someone so amazing, whose words and actions are so life-changing? You imitate him with your life. What is one way you could imitate God in your life? Maybe it’s the unconditional love he showed. Maybe you could practice his forgiveness with someone who hurt you. Maybe it’s kindness shown to a neighbor who is hurting. Maybe it’s praying fervently for something on your heart.

Whatever it might be, pick one thing (not running to first base with your arms straight back) to imitate about the one who loves you so much.

Normally we would say that boasting, i.e. bragging, isn’t a Christian virtue. Usually it turns into a very self-centered affair. However, you’ll notice in Romans 5:2, Paul says Christians boast. What? How? Isn’t that anti-Christian? Aren’t Christians supposed to be others-centered, God-centered, and humble? Here’s the neat...
