2 Corinthians 5:21

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

We have been watching the Winter Olympics over the last two weeks. During that time, there have been a lot of champions crowned. The looks of excitement and ecstasy on people’s faces after they win are just amazing. The best looks come from those who didn’t expect to win, but they pull off the race of their lives. Then when they win, WOW! There is a huge celebration. I can’t imagine what it’s like to be crowned Olympic champion in a sport.

While we may not know or ever experience being an Olympic champion, we are actually champions. We are champions over sin and death.

The season of Lent has begun and the sole focus of these 6 weeks is on Jesus, the Son of God, and what he came to do. He came to win our salvation. He came to rescue us from sin, death, and hell. He came for one purpose, to be our champion. Paul describes that very concisely in 2 Corinthians 5:21.

God gave all our sin to Jesus and in exchange we receive a victory. Jesus won the victory over the devil by defeating his temptations. He gives that to you. He won the victory over sin by paying for all of them on a cross. He gives that to you. He even won the victory over death by rising from the dead. He gives that victory to you as well.

Jesus won a great victory for you and that victory belongs to you. You are champions!

Normally we would say that boasting, i.e. bragging, isn’t a Christian virtue. Usually it turns into a very self-centered affair. However, you’ll notice in Romans 5:2, Paul says Christians boast. What? How? Isn’t that anti-Christian? Aren’t Christians supposed to be others-centered, God-centered, and humble? Here’s the neat...
